We were considering the same move just over a year ago. This last trip where I made this video, we stayed 3 weeks as a test to see what it would be like to really live there. In the end, we decided it just wasnt for us. We love the city and the sense of adventure, but culturally we are not a match. So we will stay in the US until another opportunity presents.

Cuenca is beautiful, but for being a smaller city there is too much noise. Cars abusing the use of the horn, the roaring of old motorcycles, informal sellers with music and speakers... I hate that, but it seems that that doesn't bother the cuencanos because local authority allow it.

Joe Rogan had a great guest on the other day who discussed this from a very practical view. Its a complex problem and you're right to call it a drug problem, because it is. In Sweden they call "homeless camps" Open drug Scenes. "Homeless" is a PC candy coating implying that all they need is a home...wrong.

@@mrfilmschlumpf I recently became friends with a homeless, junkie, mentally ill person in Denton. He keeps saying he just needs housing and I’m telling him otherwise. The mental health system discouraged them from coming in because they’re a burden to them. They need forced rehabilitation because they’re a menace to themselves and our society, cities etc. They won’t willingly get help. I just watched a drug addict hold up a sign in asking for money today in Denton and watched two police officers walk up to him, talk to him and left. The guy continues to hold up the sign, asking for money. What’s the point of talking to the guy if you’re going to continue to let him loiter for his habit and to keep his situation exactly the same? People have to care and not by giving them housing.

@@sarahneece6195 I heard it said like this, If your mom had dementia and was psychotic, would you let her wander the street begging for money and "camp"? Hell no. You would make her get meds and help. The same should apply to the drug addicted and mentally ill. Its criminal what the government has done to these unwell people. "We are from the government and we're here to help."

They keep adding unnecessary concrete, taking away valuable parking space, money wasted on confusing yellow arrow lights that has made driving more dangerous and stupid back in only parking spaces that are also more dangerous. Denton now sucks. Thanks city' council....keep up the good work!

Thank you for doing this documentary. I was a Ave Rat back in the mid 90s I'm sure things have changed a lot since then but it looks like at the core nothing has changed. My heart goes out to those trapped out there. Those times changed me and at times I miss the freedom and simplicity but then I remember the struggles with addiction and survival. If I wouldn't of left I would probably be dead. I wish I could be back there to work with them now. there is so much more to life than the abyss I was starring into back then.

I've known and loved so many of these people for so many years- Patrick, Turki, DJ, Chai, Rojo, Robin, Zowie... years and years of love and loss and fighting and more love shared together... I met Patrick when he was extremely young, he squatted with me and a number of our old homies, unfortunately, a large number of which are dead or incarcerated. He and I don't see each other often or stay in terribly close communication at this point, but I'm so fucking proud of him, and hopeful, for the rest of our family. I'm now working as the Shelter Coordinator at PSKS, after squatting under bridges and in abandoned buildings and whatnot for the majority of the last 17 years, 9 of which I've had the pleasure of knowing Patrick. This film is really bittersweet for me, for a lot of reasons, but it was really well done, and I'm very happy that it was. Thank you, to all of those involved in putting it together. <3

That's what's up. It's been a long, long wild trip with Patrick in life... a lot of loss and heartache for the both of us, orphans, raised on the street, where our loved ones have largely fallen to addiction, incarceration, and death, but, I've got nothin' but love for him, and for a lot of people in this video, whether or not they spoke. It's bittersweet. 17 years on the streets to opening and managing a shelter, it's wild. The only thing that kills me is that the more I move forward, the more it seems is left behind. It is what it is though-- I'm really thankful for everyone who was a part of helping this project come to life.

+wildcard2ohsix True, true. Leaving the past for what's next is hard, but part of our journey. We treasure the memories and the lives of family. The older i get, the more i see how critical it is to drink in the "right now" because soon this too will be our past. We will be looking back on right now thinking, "i remember when so n so was alive" or "that was a good time". Drink in today. It's only here for a minute. :D
